Rec: English Poetry

'4Music Film' was made in 2009 when their debut album was released and it's one of the reasons I fell for them. If you haven't heard of this band, now it's time. White Lies is a great, unique English rock band with 3 albums (the last one came out this year). This video was made of the lyrics from their first album. I like to call their songs "exaggerated stories". They talk about normal human emotions and situations, but lyrics and music make them epic and fairytale. You can relate to them, but it's like you're in a movie. (It's weird, I know.) This video shows the beauty of those lyrics and proves that modern songs could find its place in school textbooks alongside Shakespeare and Petrarca.

The video contains clips from 'To Lose My Life' and 'Death' music videos so if you liked them I'll post the whole videos for you. I think they're great.

Walkman: Background Noise

Lift music. Restaurant music. Shopping mall music. Studying music. We don't like living in silence. So what are your favourite beckground tunes? Here are the artists from my YouTube 'Beckground' playlist. They all have calm voices and slow to medium tempo. And I don't know any of the lyrics so it doesn't distract me from what I'm doing. It's just pleasant.

Runway: Glow In The Dark

This week I bought a brand new nail polish that-glows in the dark. Oooohh how cool is that? (Coz if something glows in the dark it's automatically cool.) I thought it won't work coz it's cheap (2 Euros) but guess what, it really glows!
So now I'm thinking, why is kitsch so amusing? I think that the answer is simple-it's unusual and interesting. Wearing something shiny, socks+sandals, high-heel sneackers, neon colours... It makes you unique. I'm aware that some people dress like that to attract attention, but I don't. I don't ever dress for someone else and I don't care if someone doesn't like what I'm wearing (as long as it's appropriate). I follow trends, but I don't always accept them. And yes, I will put on myself something shiny, but I won't turn myself into a disco ball. One piece is quite enough. So I wanna encourage you to wear kitsch if you like it. Just combine it with street fashion.

And what I found in my Polyvore folder:
I'm not a fan of high-heel sneakers at all, but these actually look good.

Printed tights? Why not!

P.S. You can find all my photographs (posted here) on Flickr. I added the link in the left sidebar.

Bookmark: One And Only Nick Hornby

So, the other day I found out about a new movie 'A Long Way Down' (will be out in 2014). I can't wait! Not just that I like that book, but I also worship its author Nick Hornby.
"New Year’s Eve on the top of a London skyscraper. Martin (Brosnan) is literally on the edge. A once-beloved TV personality, he’s now desperate to jump. But he’s not alone. Single mother Maureen (Collette), sassy teen Jess (Poots), and musician turned pizza-delivery boy JJ (Paul), have all turned up on the same roof with the same plan. Instead of jumping, these complete strangers make a pact to stay alive and stay together until Valentine’s Day at least." (Hornby's blog)

Nick Hornby is an English novelist, essayist and screenwriter. Wether you describe his texts as drama or comedy, they always intertwine with music, sport, modern society or fundamental human nature.
I haven't read all his books yet coz they don't have them in the library and I hate reading on the computer, but I loved every single one of them so far (except 'Fever Pitch' which I haven't even borrowed simply coz it's about football, but than again it's Hornby so how bad can it be).

Some of his books have been turned into a movie already, like 'About a Boy' and 'Hight Fidelity'. He also wrote a screenplay for 'An Education' starring Carey Mulligan and Peter Sarsgraad. At some point in his creative life history he was a pop-music critic and a live-band member (he was just reading his work though).

This collection of stories 'Speaking with the Angel' I read three times in a row (only one is Hornby's but he created the collection). My final words: I'll leave you with a choice-to read 'A Long Way Down' first or to watch it first. There's no other option. (I recommend reading, I can tell with certanty it'll be good).
