Julian Melchiorri is a British/Italian designer, engineer and innovator based in London. He combines science and art by exploring new scenarios and experiences through innovative
experimentations of materials, functions and interaction. This is his silk & light installation 'Cocoon'.

"Cocoon illustrate the metamorphosis of light, material and shape through
multiple technological interventions, questioning the reliability of
our sensorial perception of reality." (julianmelchiorri.com)
Ok, I want this in my home. It's just too majestic.
"Cocoon is made by silk protein nano optics fabricated by Julian while he
was working in lab exploring silk protein properties. Julian firstly synthesized the protein solution directly from worm silk
and crafted 2700 nano-prisms per millimetre on its surface thanks to
Electron Beam technology. (...) When a ray
of light passing through the material get diffracted by the
nano-prisms, the light wavelength is sparse till its real composition
get revealed."(julianmelchiorri.com)
