Rec: Halloween Edition

(Snapshot)

Watch on VimeoThe Eel

Directed by Dominic Hailstone, music by Robert Clunne 'Where What'.
"A short horror film about an Eel who gets fed up of being in his tank. (...) It was produced over a six month period and cost £300 to make. Apart from the Eel puppet, all the fx were made using selotape, bamboo, condoms and stockings. It was made deliberately low tech and low budget to see how far I could push the idea." (in video description

It's Halloween today (but you already know that lol). It is an American holiday, but we'll accept any occasion to party (or earn money), so I'm going out in a costume too. That was a video to set the mood for tonight's adventures. Though it probably wasn't that scarry coz you expected it to be.

Bookmark: Between Dream And Reality

I'm reading 'Dance Dance Dance' by Haruki Murakami, one of my favourite writers. He's a Japanise but is interested in American literature so his work is modern and popular among young readers. It's very easy to read his books; no long difficult sentences, no endless chapters, no too much characters. And they're sooo interesting. Each book is like a puzzle. There's a mistery that needs to be solved, but the reader can't really do it coz not all elements of the book are real. There's a fantasy world, like a metaphor, but still normal to those characters in the book. Intriguing.

Murakami's books are so beautiful because they're wise, eye-opening and stimulating. He criticizes modern society, the lack of purposeful life and the simple joys, human interrelationships. This is all accomplished through interesting (we'd say weird) characters and events.

Some quotes I've written down:
"In this world there are things you can only do alone and things you can only do with somebody else." ('After Dark')
"...playing really creatively (...) You send the music deep enough into your heart so that it makes your body undergo a kind of a physical shift, and simultaneously the listener's body also undergoes the same kind of physical shift. It's giving birth to that kind of shared state." ('After Dark')
"I live my life, you live yours. If you're clear about what you want, then you can live anyway you please. I don't give a damn what people say. They can be reptile food for all I care." ('Dance Dance Dance')

Can't wait to finish the book. But then again, I don't want it to end.

Runway: Missguided

Presenting a lovely editorial for Missguided-Autumn/Winter 2013 campaign. It's a British online clothing store. I love their items, but shipping is not free so I doubt I'll order something :-(
Take a look here:www.missguided.co.uk.

The editorial is a mix of grunge and boho. And it's kinda appropriate for the coming Halloween.

Cro: Favourite Bands

I'd like to go (and if I find company, I will) to a lot of concerts over the next month. So I'll share with you my favourite "Balkan" artists (from Croatia and its neighborhood).

The 1st concert-Dubioza Kolektiv
Tomorrow (26.10.) in Dom sportova (sold out!).
A band from Bosnia and Herzegovina, very popular all over Europe. They really do appear on almost every festival. They sing in English too. The main feature of the band are politically engaged lyrics. Their music is a mix of rock, reggae, hip-hop, folk and sky. What I like about them is that they perform very good (singing and playing) and their songs are full of energy (I loose a couple of pounds during the concerts).

The 2nd concert-The Bambi Molesters
7.11. in Vintage Industrial Bar.
I've already written about them here.

The 3rd concert-Vatra
14.11. in Vintage Industrial Bar.
Vatra is my favourite Croatian band and I love them unconditionally. They play rock with the impact of electronics. The range of the lyrics, sounds and tempo is great. They don't repeat themselves but are still great (that's very important for me). The band is wild on stage, especially the frontman Ivan Dečak who's a legend. Sooo looking forward to this one.

The 4th concert-Elemental
16.11. in Tvornica kulture.
One of very rear hip-hop bands I like. Their lyrics are so good; I can literally relate to them without exaggeration. They sing about love, society, politics, true values, struggle, human psyche... I like how they started palying reggae and rock lately (on their last two albums). Their music is played on radio stations which is awesome (I heard them 3 times in 30 minutes just the other day). It's coz they don't rap all the time. Their female vocal is a great singer too.

Rec: Storytelling

Music videos for "Line of Fire" and "Your Life Your Call" by Junip.

I'm amazed by these videos. Look at the effects of faltering *.* I also like the ambience (the house and the light), the music obviously and-the most important-the story. A lot of people find the videos creppy, but I find them obscure and intrguing rather than creepy. And the clever symbolism, I looove that! If you don't understand what's going on read the comments from You Tube by sugarpeepsez (I think this interpretation is very good, but of course maybe yours is even better):
"It uses very few symbols if you look closely, but they repeat. Hair, for instance, is emphasized-we see his wife blow-drying her very blond long hair-the hair moves in the dryer's wind as she turns it back and forth, over and over. The sister's similar hair is pointed out by having the fan's wind move it over and over, too." "Also helpful to note how the camera is used-framing, close-up, how long the shot is static. Close-up means: pay attention to this! If the camera lingers in one position, it also wants you to stop and look carefully. When two big items are in frame and each takes up half, like the couple at the bathroom sink, it is comparing and contrasting the items-are they they same in some way?" "Part 1-middle aged man lays in bed thinking about how, in the very religious household of his youth, his sister once seduced him, and his father never knew. The wife is thinking about how the husband looked when she first met him, and when they have sex, she is thinking of his younger self, still in braces. The husband had first been attracted to her because her hair reminded him of his sister's hair." "Part 2-to break free of the secret of his childhood, he needs to get rid of his sin with his sister, and he chooses firing lit hairspray at her hair (and his wife's hair, a continuation of his desire for his sister) as a symbol of this. No one is actually getting killed, the visuals and music are about his decision to free himself of his guilt and his unhappy marriage. At the end, his teen and mature selves are together in the sauna; he took himself back from his wife/sister."

Gallery: Space Dust

Antoine Delacharlery is engaged in design, animation and production. I love two of his videos. The first one shows different mixtures of liquid shot in macro.
Watch it here: MACROS/ INK world_v01.

The second one is about universe and I don't know how it was made (I believe it's 3D animation) but the description says that the ink played a role.

You absolutely have to see the videos. They really do represent something beyond earthly. And if you are interested in the rest of his work visit his website:

Runway: Autumn Hugs

Autumn clothes reminds me of hugs. Cozy sweaters, tights and ankle boots. Can you feel them wrapped around you? *puppy smile with closed eyes*
This is what I'd wear to college right now. But I only have tights and boots :-( (Oh Polyvore why are you doing this to me?)

This outfit I could actually pull out. I do own a white jumper, floral tights, boots, eyeliner, various rings, black nail polish, brown bag and headband. So please buy me a new phone and Chanel no.5.

I don't know what it is with autumn and floral print, but I find it so complementary. Maybe coz leaves are not so appealing on fabric as flowers. Leaves... That would be funny... Lol. I'm having weird statements lately.
(All collages by me.)

Dark Room: Secret Life

I wanted to wright about something else coz I post about photography quite often, but I just need to do it again. Yesterday I spent hours scrolling through this guy's portfolio on Flickr and Tumblr. He's so good at capturing moments and atmosphere that you instantly lose touch with reality. Welcome to my secret life:

Photos of people need to be very special to get my attention I must admit. That's why I admire photographers like Theo Gosselin who make pure art. Even the titles of his photos are so clever and complementing. Find them on Flickr
;-) Now I'll leave you with more printscreens (again sorry, but these are protected):

P.S. I'm making an inspiration board for the door of my room. What do you think about the idea? Should I show you the result? I'll include this one:

Cro: World Traveler

If you have time but not money, and want to see the world, visit this web-site: Putovanje na vrh.
Božidar Dragašić-Bodo travels the globe and climbs the highest mountains. The site is not in english but Google translator will do. The point is in pictures anyway.

Greece

Jordan

France

Byelorussia

India
As you can see, his photos are gorgeous (I'm sorry for the bad quality, they're printscreened). I love how he calculates what to include in the picture and from which perspective. I learned a lot from him when I was younger and didn't even have a proper camera. That's why this photo diary is so precious. He's been to so many places, it's unbelievable. He crossed the lenght and breadth of Europe and visited other continents too. A dream come true.

Rec: English Poetry

'4Music Film' was made in 2009 when their debut album was released and it's one of the reasons I fell for them. If you haven't heard of this band, now it's time. White Lies is a great, unique English rock band with 3 albums (the last one came out this year). This video was made of the lyrics from their first album. I like to call their songs "exaggerated stories". They talk about normal human emotions and situations, but lyrics and music make them epic and fairytale. You can relate to them, but it's like you're in a movie. (It's weird, I know.) This video shows the beauty of those lyrics and proves that modern songs could find its place in school textbooks alongside Shakespeare and Petrarca.

The video contains clips from 'To Lose My Life' and 'Death' music videos so if you liked them I'll post the whole videos for you. I think they're great.
